Gallier Cenotaph

Cenotapth erected by James Gallier, Jr., to the memory of his father, James Gallier, and his stepmother. The senior Gallier was one of the foremost architects in New Orleans' history. The Old City Hall building on St. Charles Avenue, designed by Gallier, now bears his name. Note that this monument is a cenotaph, not a tomb. Gallier and his wife were lost at sea on a voyage from New York to New Orleans, on October 3, 1866.
