Rogers-Palfrey-Brewster-Stilwell Cross

The Western Face

This side faces into the cemetery.

The first panel below the solar cross depicts an Eucharistic Chalice, the sort a priest would use at Mass.  The first name inscribed on this side of the cross is “Matthew Brewster DD,â€? who was an Episcopal priest.

The next panel is from the Requium Liturgy:  “Grant Them Eternal Rest, O, Lord, and Let Light Perpetual Shine Upon Them.â€?

The third panel on the Western face is a very interesting one. It’s the seal of the Order of Cincinatti, a hereditary socity of ancestors of officers of the Continental Army (USA) who fought in the American Revolution. The Latin inscription is the motto of the Order, "Omnia relinquit servare rem publicam" (He gives up everything to serve the republic). The Scripture reference below the seal (Philippians 1-3) is “I thank my God every time I remember you.

The final panel lists another set of names (dates are inscribed on the Southern face):

Matthew Brewster D.D. 1859 - 1938

Buncombe Rogers Brewster 1872 - 1956

Walter Rogers Brewster M.D. 1896 - 1968

Matilda Stillwell Brewster 1898 - 1985

Bettie Hall Stillwell 1866 - 1930

Francis M. Stillwell 1860 - 1936

Alfred C. Stillwell 1907 - 1956
