Founded in 1879, Holt Cemetery is named for Dr. Joseph Holt, a city health board official. It is located right next to Delgado Junior College, just off of City Park Avenue.
Holt Cemetery is the city's "potter's field," it's graveyard for indigents. Because those buried in Holt are usually poor, the graves are not the elaborate tombs seen in the city's other cemeteries. Many plots are unmarked, and those that are marked are usually done so with wooden "headstones" or crosses.
The most notable person buried in Holt is jazz musician Buddy Bolden. Additionally, there are a number of interesting graves in the cemetery worth noting. We also have information here on a volunteer group, “Hope for Holt, that works to keep the cemetery clean.
