Greenwood Cemetery

Old postcard of the Fireman’s Monument, Greenwood Cemetery.

Capitalizing on the success of their first cemetery (Cypress Grove), the Fireman's Charitable and Benevolent Association bought an additional parcel of land across the street in 1859 and constructed Greenwood Cemetery. While Greenwood's overall size is smaller than Metairie Cemeteries, its number of tombs and graves is much larger, due to the 6'x9' plot size. With the exception of the monuments at the front of the cemetery, all the plots are small and tightly arranged. There is no external landscaping as was done in Metairie Cemetery.
