Crematorium, Holt Cemetery

Holt Cemetery is the “potter’s field” for New Orleans. As such, it has spent much of its existence in a deplorable state. Preservation groups have stepped up in recent years to clean Holt up, enabling visitors to get a better look at the cemetery.

One one trip just after a cleaning crew had worked through the rear of Holt, I discovered a curious little structure. Closer inspection revealed that it was a small crematorium. This was the first time I’d ever heard of a crematorium right on a cemetery’s grounds, but then, this is a potter’s field.

Check out our Holt Cemetery section for more info and pics.  If anyone has any details or stories about this crematorium or Holt, or cemeteries in New Orleans, please feel free to contact me.
