The Army of Northern Virginia (Louisiana Division) Memorial, Metairie Cemetery
New Orleans might have originally been a French colony, but by the time of the War Between the States, the city was totally part of the Confederacy. When war broke out, thousands of men joined the Confederate armies. This monument is the burial place of veterans of the Army of Northern Virginia, the nemesis of the Grand Army of the Republic, whose monument in Chalmette National Cemetery was last week’s Feature Photo.. It is one of the most prominent monuments in Metairie Cemetery, which is saying a lot, Metairie being the wealthiest cemetery in the area.
The tumulus below the monument was also the first resting place of Jefferson Davis, the only President of the CSA.
