Canal Street

Cypress Grove

Constructed in 1840 by the Fireman’s Charitable and Benevolent Association.  Many volunteer fire companies purchased society tombs here, and a number of notable Protestant families purchased tombs in Cypress Grove when the Girod Street Cemetery began to show signs of neglect and decay.

One of the more interesting tombs in Cypress Grove is the receiving vault of the Soon On Tong Association.  The Chinese community used this structure as a temporary burial site, performing various burial rituals here, then relocating the remains to China as time and finances permitted.
