The Mortuary Chapel of St. Anthony

The Mortuary Chapel of St. Anthony, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, is the oldest church in New Orleans. Yes, it pre-dates St. Louis Cathedral, since fires destroyed or damaged the earlier buildings on the cathedral site, and the current church there dates from the 1840s.

From its origins as a funeral chapel during the worst of the city’s yellow fever outbreaks to being abandoned at times, the church is now a vibrant and thriving place, housing the International Shrine of St. Jude.
