Masonic Cemetery - Perfect Union #1

The vault of Perfect Union Lodge #1 in Metairie Cemetery on City Park Avenue. This vault dates back to just after the Civil War. We have two Lodges numbered "1" in Louisiana. Perfect Union was chartered by the GL of Louisiana, which received its charter from the GL of Pennsylvania. Etoile Polaire was chartered some years prior to Perfect Union, but by the Grand Orient of France. It was re-chartered under the GL of Louisiana in 1812, and both lodges share the distinction of being Number One.

Metairie Cemetery: The Old Main Gate

Here are three postcard views of the original Metairie Cemetery main gate:

The main gate around 1908. In the left background is the Moriarity monument, to the right, the tumulus of the Army of Northern Tennessee, Louisiana Division. The water in the foreground is the New Basin Canal.

Close-up of the right-hand side. The arches were torn down in the late 1940s, when the New Basin Canal was filled in and the Pontchartrain Expressway was constructed. The main gate of the cemetery was moved further north on Pontchartrain Blvd. to its current location.

The date on this postcard appears to say '08, but the photo is earlier, before the ivy overtook the stonework. The greenery isn't just an artist's fancy; a number of photographs show the vines.

If anyone can read that handwriting, I'd be curious as to what the postcard says.
